Root Canals

Capturing the moments

To help combat inflammation or infection a Root Canal may be necessary. Dr Kish can help provide a gentle, lasting treatment that can save your tooth and tackle any further damage or issues.

About the Procedure

Damaged teeth can often become the target of bacteria which can lead to irritation, swelling and pain. The inside cavity of the tooth can become infected and either a full removal or a Root Canal is required to fix the problem. Without treatment, the infection could form an abscess which is more painful and can create further complications in your teeth and jaw.

Below is an outline about the procedure:

1. As a Root Canal can be a delicate and sensitive procedure Dr Kish will require information about your medical history, previous dental treatments and will need to take an X-Ray of the affected tooth.

2. Using local anaesthetic (which means you will be awake but the area will be numbed), Dr Kish will make a hole in the top of your tooth and clean out the interior area. Several tools may be required to smooth and tidy the tooth whilst it is being disinfected.

3. Once the tooth is clean it will be filled and sealed. Sometimes this may require a second appointment if the tooth hasn't been fully disinfected and a temporary filling has been installed. Depending on the extent of the initial damage a crown may also be fitted on top of the tooth.

Root Canals can sometimes become uncomfortable as you will have to sit still with your mouth open for a while. Dr Kish will make sure you are as ready and prepared as possible before going into the procedure and he will regularly communicate and monitor your satisfaction throughout the process.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the recovery take?

In the immediate aftermath of the treatment the first thing you will notice will be the feeling returning to your jaw and face as the anaesthetic wears off. You can counter some of this pain with paracetamol or ibuprofen. Beyond this, Dr Kish will advise you as to whether you need further appointments or X-Rays. Regular brushing, mouthwash and flossing is a good tip for general oral health, but even more so when it comes to Root Canals.

Are there any side-effects or complications?

As with any treatment, your reaction and the success of the procedure can vary from person to person. Swelling and minor pain can be a side-effect, but longer term issues and pain can still be present. Since you will be having an infection removed, it is always possible that some remains and a re-treatment may be required later down the line.
